A collaborative project between 3M and the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) has been forged to conduct in-depth research into the Emphaze AEX Hybrid Purifier.

The project involves two studies, each performed independently by the NIBRT. The first study, which began in January, is examining the effect of chromatographic clarification on host cell DNA and the specific type and quantity of host cell proteins removed prior to downstream processing. Findings from this initial study will then be built upon in the second study and gains in performance from optimising the load conditions for the device will also be investigated.

3M’s purifier is a part of its Emphaze platform and combines chromatographic functionality with a filter matrix in a single use plug and play device. The aim of the research is to quantify and qualify the impact the device will have on downstream process in terms of complexity and cost.
