As Analytica 2018 kicks off in Messe München, we take a brief sneak peek at a few of the exciting developments being offered on the show floor at this vast event for lab tech, analysis and biotech.

Showcasing microplate and chromatography products
Porvair Sciences is showcasing its latest microplate and chromatography products during this year’s exhibition in Munich, Germany.

The company’s 96-well Supported Liquid Extraction (SLE) microplate has been designed for high recovery extraction of analytes from biological fluids and can operate without the need for offline steps, such as protein precipitation. Featuring large pore size and high pore volume of the diatomaceous earth inert support and a wide working range (pH 1–13), the SLE microplate enables users to routinely separate viscous aqueous solutions, such as blood, plasma and serum.
Additionally, a new range of pierceable cap mats from Porvair’s sister company JG Finneran Associates will be showcased. These new cap mats are manufactured from chemically resistant PTFE with a silicone lining and come with a specially weakened area in a shape of a cross on each of the 96-well sections.
Furthermore, Porvair will be showing its latest lab automation products, including the Ultravap Mistral — a product designed to remove the traditional laboratory ‘bottleneck’ of solvent evaporation from microplates, the Universal Robotic Manifold for productive automation of SPE or DNA clean-up procedures and the MiniSeal Plus electronically controlled thermal sealer developed for laboratories sealing small to medium batches of microplates.

A competitive edge
Analytical instrumentation specialist, Shimadzu, will present the current and new highlights from its entire analytical instrumentation range consisting of chromatography, spectroscopy, spectrometry, TOC, material testing and software at this year’s Analytica show.

“The runner is our key visual for the 2018 Analytica show and symbolises our central idea of ‘High performance for competitive edge’, helping customers to move previous technological boundaries, overcome obstacles and develop new methods for their applications,” stated Jürgen Semmler, managing director of Shimadzu Germany.

- Nexgen GC CAGC-100 — small footprint with fast analysis time
- FTIR spectrometer IRSpirit – a space saver providing maximum sample space with minimum footprint
- Nexis GC-2030 — high sensitivity and reproducibility
- Ultra-fast mass spectrometry (UFMS) with the GCMS-TQ8050 and LCMS-8060
- Nexera UC/s — liquid and supercritical fluid chromatography with only one system
- Additionally, Shimadzu will give an update on the latest developments at the European Innovation Center, the merger of analytical technology and scientific expertise.

Making its debut
Autoscribe Informatics — the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) specialist — will be exhibiting at Analytica 2018 for the first time.

During their debut at the show, the company will provide visitors with the opportunity to see its Matrix Gemini LIMS — which is supported through a network of distributors across Europe.
Featuring easy to use graphical configuration tools and a dual desktop/web interface included as standard, Matrix can be used to create LIMS solutions for varying customers’ needs.
The comprehensive built-in configuration tools allow system configuration without the need for custom software coding. The tools use an intuitive visual workflow screen editor that utilises visual drag and drop and point and click methods to add fields, list boxes etc. An unlimited number of screens can be created, modified and linked together. In this way, the LIMS can be designed quickly to represent user requirements in terms of workflows, screen designs, menu designs, terminology, report designs and much more.
Additionally, the LIMS can be adapted over time as individual needs change ensuring that the system can grow with the laboratory requirements, with the product line being specifically developed to ensure backwards compatibility and easy upgrades for existing customers.

Point-of-need analysis
Launching at this year’s show will be the latest chip-based mass spectrometer from Microsaic Systems — the 4500 MiD.

This mass spectrometer uses chip-based miniaturisation technology to provide agile sample detection and identification at the point of use. Combining the vacuum system, electronics and computer inside on box, with no need for a floor pump, the 4500 MiD offers a one box solution for MS detection. In addition, a change in front-end alignment has also strengthened system uptime while reducing the deposition of contaminants downstream.
